I.
POSITION
Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology Manager, the Medical Sonographer is responsible for the provision of ultrasound services to patients according to physicians' orders.
Performs ultrasound procedures at a technical level.
Provides for patient safety and high quality testing.
II.
Essential Functions:
Instructs and prepares patients for ultrasound examinations.
Selects appropriate equipment to use for procedures.
Determines most suitable anatomical posture and positions patients accordingly.
Makes special sonographic examinations requiring special transducers and procedures.
Programs portable or stationary ultrasound machines.
Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures.
Assists in the maintenance of all equipment in the department, including cleaning and minor repairs.
Facilitates departmental operations through completion of all patient logs, charge requisitions, and other paper work.
Maintain safety precautions to minimize risk to patients, other personnel, and self.
Participates in quality control and performance improvement activities within the department.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Prepares patients appropriately for examination.
Communicates and works with other staff in administering preps.
Sets both mobile and stationary equipment for use.
Performs routine ultrasound examinations and assists in procedures in other areas of the department.
Maintains current knowledge of diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
Possesses basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to apply principles of sonography.
Possesses basic knowledge of ultrasound equipment functioning to provide for minor repair and trouble-shooting for problems.
Assures ultrasound machine is maintained (periodic maintenance is completed by service technicians and all service repairs are completed with notification of manager).
Possesses specialized knowledge of sterile technique and its application in the invasive procedures performed in the department.
Utilizes communication skills effectively in working with patients, physicians, and other personnel.
Utilizes appropriate body mechanics in moving and lifting patients and equipment to prevent injury to patients and to self.
Applies principles of standard safety in the performance of position responsibilities.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide services to patients served in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to age-specific needs.
Bases actions on sound judgment in a variety of changing situations.
Maintains own proficiency through the utilization of inservice programs, workshops, seminars, and other self-directed learning activities.
Maintains awareness of own limitations and seeks guidance from appropriate personnel when needed.
Maintains awareness of current hospital and departmental operational policies and procedures which impact on position responsibilities.
Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
Actively participates in departmental committees and group meetings with a focus on providing input regarding improving the quality of patient care services in the facility.
Ensures that problems/concerns regarding activities in the department are communicated with appropriate personnel.
Clean ultrasound machine daily.
Assists in maintain basic records and reports.
Assists in maintaining files.
Assists in training of students and ancillary personnel.
Completes all work before leaving.
Requirements:
I.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School diploma required, AA degree or higher desired.
Graduate of Diagnositc Medical Sonography School.
Current registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (suggested).
Prefer two years experience under a Board Certified Radiologist performing ultrasound modalities.
Current BCLS certification.
Extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Knowledge of principles of physics, electricity and related physical sciences as applied to ultrasound and other commonly used ultrasound techniques.
Knowledge of the hazards of ultrasound materials and safety precautions required.
Previous experience in hospital environment preferred.
SPI, ARDMS, CCI, and RVT preferred.
II.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS a.
Physical Activity - Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 5 pounds of force constantly to more objects.
Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
b.
Working Hazards or Risks - Potential for musculoskeletal injuries due to moving/lifting patients and equipment, potential for exposure to infectious process, and potential for exposure to radiation.
OSHA Blood Borne Risk Category I.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
