Bakersfield, CA Bakersfield, CA $67,065 a year $67,065 a year Class Summary Under general direction, performs professional and administrative work in the coordination and dissemination of citywide information internally and to the media and general public; creates a variety of outreach materials for projects and programs in support of communications plans and strategies; develops timely and appropriate content; acts as a resource and liaison with the city's technology staff to provide technical assistance to City officials and departments in preparation of internal and external publications and social media; and performs other related work as required.

Essential Duties:
Works with PIO and department heads to make sure information is disseminated both internally and externally through a variety of different channels.
Speaks to the media and public on behalf of the City.
Crafts press and public communication materials.
Creates press releases/media invites, fact sheets, and supplemental documents.
Designs public event flyers or infographics.
Creates and monitors content on the City's website.
Monitors and maintains the City's social media presence on multiple platforms.
Creates regular, engaging posts and activity for the City's accounts, communicating important information about the City and its programs to the public.
Communicates with the public via personal meeting, apps, phone, etc.
, when appropriate Promotes public use of the Bakersfield Mobile app.
Provides public access to services, as well as sending alerts for events, incidents and emergencies.
Assists with planning of media and public events hosted by the City.
Assists with coordinating messaging with citywide information staff.
Maintains the integrity of the City's branding and logo usage.
Approves internal items and documentation, as well as use on external-facing products or documents.
Assists with compiling weekly General Information Memorandum.
Works collaboratively with Technology Services Media Team on various video and photo projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of journalism and public relations, including understanding of requirements of various media.
Social Media platforms and marketing (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
) Techniques and methods used in development and evaluation of communications Organization, services and functions of municipal government.
Requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and the Brown Act Principles and practices of public speaking Statistics and graphic presentation; related computer applications including word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
Creative design, print publication, advertising, and commercial print processing.
Principles and practices of communication, information technology, project management, and records management.
Business English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Standard proofreading and editing practices.
Personal computer operation; software applications including graphics and desktop publishing systems.
Interviewing techniques, communications, media services and resources.
Research methods and techniques and report presentation.
Ability to:

Present and prepare press releases, new articles, presentations, reports and other written materials in a timely and recipient appropriate manner.
Prepare and present a variety of communications materials; Write and edit newsletters and news releases; prepare and give presentations; edit materials for proper punctuation and grammar.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City of officials, employees, the public and news media.
Coordinate activities with other divisions and City departments.
Operate a personal computer and applicable software including graphics and desktop publishing systems.
Training and
Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in, Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or related field; AND Two (2) years of professional experience in public relations, communications, public information, and print media; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the capabilities to perform the described job duties.
Licenses and Certificates:
A valid California Class C driver's license Must be able to pass a background check Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
Standard office environment and working conditions.
May be required to work outdoors, evenings and weekends or holidays when necessary.
Local site visits and travel may be required.
Distinguishing Characteristics The Communications Coordinator is distinguished from the Public Information Officer (PIO) in that it is required to assist the Public Information Officer in the messaging and delivery of the City's communications strategies.
Where the PIO has overall responsibility for the management, administration, and operational direction for the Office of Communications.
